WEB 2.0 TECHNOLOGY (SOCIAL MEDIA)


Web 2.0 is term that was introduced in 2004 and refers to the second generation of the World Wide Web. The term "2.0" comes from the software industry, where new versions of software programs are labeled with an incremental version number. Like software, the new generation of the Web includes new features and functionality that was not available in the past. However, Web 2.0 does not refer to a specific version of the Web, but rather a series of technological improvements.
The examples of Web 2.0:
  • Blogs - allow users to post thoughts and updates about their life on the Web.
  • Wikis - sites like Wikipedia and others enable users from around the world to add and update online content.
  • Social Networking – such as Facebook and MySpace allow users to build and customize their own profile and communicate with friends.
  • Web applications - a broad range of new applications make it possible for users to run programs directly in a Web browser.

The business sector also using Web 2.0 technology to:
1.      Recruiting

·         According to a recent report (Network Solution, 2010) social media use in the small business sector doubled from 12 to 24% in 2009.

·         (Hird, 2009) mentioned a company that compiles social media statistics over 80% of companies used LinkedIn as their primary recruiting tool.

·         Most users join LinkedIn for free but most of them wants to use all the benefits and tools of the site upgrade to a premium account by paying a subscription fee. User can create profile include their resume, personal and also can post the status about what they are doing now. It also allows people to post endorsement of others which provides a way for sharing testimonials. So, users can expand their networks by either directly asking to comment with others or through referrals and introductions from people in their existing network (Turban & Volonino,2012).

·         Added by Tuban and Volonino (2012) LinkedIn has changed their recruiting strategies as well as job hunting strategies. It s because Job hunters need to master various social media tools in order to make contact with and establish relationship with potential employers.

·         Turban and Volonino (2012) also mentioned that LinkedIn provides a way for candidates to gain visibility by expanding their network, joining LinkedIn group, building their reputations by participating in Question an Answers discussion, generating testimonials and integrating these activities with other social media tools.


2.      Marketing and promotion

·         The sellers are using the Web 2.0 to create blog such as Facebook, MySpace and others social media to promote their products and services. So many potential customers view and will attract people to purchase it. As a result the sale will increase and same goes to profit to increase as well.
